Covid is still rampant in India, and more cases of the black fungus that was found in some patients have been reported. A total of 1,250 black fungus (mucormycosis) cases have been reported in a southwest state of the county so far.
Of the affected patients, 1,193 are still under treatment. While 18 patients have been discharged, 39 people have succumbed to the fungus, stated a bulletin released by the health department on Sunday, May 30th. The state’s health minister said they are working to get the proper medication to the places most affected by the fungus.

Duas palavras que causam confusão, até mesmo entre os nativos, são EFFECT e AFFECT. The shift comes in an attempt to reverse the country’s aging population, after census data showed a steep decline in birth rates.
China scrapped its decades-old one-child policy in 2016, replacing it with a two-child limit which has failed to lead to a sustained upsurge in births.
The cost of raising children in cities has deterred many Chinese couples.
Human rights organization Amnesty International said the policy, like its predecessors, was still a violation of sexual and reproductive rights.
“Governments have no business regulating how many children people have. Rather than ‘optimizing’ its birth policy, China should instead respect people’s life choices and end any invasive and punitive controls over people’s family planning decisions,” said the group’s China team head, Joshua Rosenzweig.
Also, some experts were skeptical of the impact.
“If relaxing the birth policy was effective, the current two-child policy should have proven to be effective too,” Hao Zhou, a senior economist at Commerzbank, told Reuters news agency.
“But who wants to have three kids? Tens of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets on Saturday, 29, to voice their frustrations with President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis, in what appeared to be the largest protests the country has seen since the pandemic began last year.
The demonstrators turned out in more than 200 cities and towns across the country on Saturday, carrying signs such as “Out with Bolsonaro” and “Impeachment now.”
“Today is a decisive milestone in the battle to defeat Bolsonaro’s genocidal administration,” said Silvia de Mendonça, 55, a civil rights activist from Brazil’s Unified Black Movement as she led a column of protesters through Rio’s city center.
Osvaldo Bazani da Silva, a 48-year-old hairdresser who lost his younger brother to Covid-19, said: “We can’t lose any more Brazilian lives. We need to hit the streets every single day until this government falls.”
On Tuesday, May 25, the Senate opened an investigation into whether there was criminal neglect in President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the pandemic.
The far-right president has controversially downplayed the virus, fought stay-at-home measures to contain it and rejected offers of various vaccines – including, initially, Pfizer’s.
Brazil is facing a possible third wave of Covid-19, with the Health Ministry reporting 79,670 new Covid-19 cases and 2,012 coronavirus-related deaths on Saturday alone. The country has recorded more than 460,000 deaths from Covid-19 and 16 million infections.
In Manaus, graves are being dug in streets because there are no remaining plots to bury the dead in the cemetery.
Of its population of more than 210 million, around 19 million — or fewer than 9.4% — have been fully vaccinated.
In some good news, mass vaccination created a healthy oasis in Serrana, a city in southeastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo. The city has seen a 95% drop in COVID-19 deaths after it concluded vaccination of almost all adults, TV Globo reported on Sunday.
Serrana was the subject of a study by Instituto Butantan, which produces the Coronavac vaccine developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech (SVA.O) in Brazil.
A similar experiment is underway in another city in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s richest state. The city of Botucatu expects to immunize most of its 148,000 inhabitants with the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

UNDERWAY é uma palavra que combina duas outras, formando uma com significado diferente das palavras separadas. UNDER significa <hlt>“sob”<hlt>, ou <hlt>“debaixo”<hlt>, e WAY significa <hlt>“caminho”<hlt>. UNDERWAY pode ser traduzida para <hlt>“em andamento”<hlt>.

Let’s end this episode with more good news, shall we? A vaccine trial for type 1 diabetes has shown promise, as it helped sustain the body’s natural insulin production.
Injecting the protein GAD (or glutamic acid decarboxylase) into a patient’s lymph nodes protects their capacity to make insulin, according to a study from Linköping University. When a person has type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin.
The immune system of people with type 1 diabetes targets the beta cells in the pancreas that make insulin, a hormone that allows cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream. The body’s ability to control blood sugar levels is lost after all of these cells are eliminated. For this reason, those with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin shots just to stay alive.
The researchers at Linköping University sought to see if a vaccination might be able to stop or reduce the loss of these insulin-producing beta cells.
“Studies have shown that even an extremely small production of insulin in the body is highly beneficial for patient health,” Dr. Johnny Ludvigsson, lead author and senior professor at Linköping University’s Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, stated in a university release.
The trial is still in its early phases, but the results are grounds for optimism!
And that’s where we’re going to end today’s episode.
