Now, let\u2019s get started and see what\u2019s been going on since our last episode. This weekend the 64th annual Grammys happened. It was, basically, a three-and-a-half-hour mega concert. The ceremony, which <\/em>steered clear<\/em><\/strong> of politics and the pandemic, saw a virtual message from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy and an emotional tribute to victims of the Russian invasion.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the light of last week\u2019s Academy Award\u2019s unexpected incident, the Grammys seemed to revel in its technical proficiency and lack of controversy. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna be listening to some music, we\u2019re gonna be dancing, we\u2019re gonna be singing, we\u2019re gonna be keeping people\u2019s names out of our mouths,\u201d said host Trevor Noah in his opening monologue.<\/em><\/p>\n

The teenage pop star Olivia Rodrigo and the R&B duo Silk Sonic dominated the major categories at this year\u2019s awards. Jon Batiste won Best American Roots Performance for “Cry,” Album of the year for “We Are,” Best American roots song, Best music video and Best score soundtrack for visual media for \u201cSoul.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Halfway through the ceremony, Noah introduced Zelenskiy: \u201cEven in the darkest times, music has the power to lift spirits and give you hope for a brighter tomorrow. There\u2019s nobody who could use a little hope right now more than the people of Ukraine.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In a pre-filmed video, Zelenskiy cast music as an embodiment of peace and freedom. \u201cOur musicians wear body armor instead of tuxedos. They sing to the wounded in hospitals, even to those who can\u2019t hear them. But the music will break through anyway.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u200dNessa not\u00edcia, n\u00f3s temos o uso do idiom <\/em>steer clear<\/em><\/strong>. Voc\u00ea j\u00e1 conhece o uso dessa express\u00e3o? <\/em>Steer clear<\/em><\/strong> significa \u201cafastar\u201d, \u201cevitar\u201d. \u00c9 um idiom, uma express\u00e3o t\u00edpica do ingl\u00eas, que tem o mesmo significado de outros verbos, mas acaba sendo mais usada. <\/em>Steer<\/em><\/strong> significa \u201cdirigir\u201d, \u201cconduzir\u201d, mas quando pareado com <\/em>clear<\/em><\/strong>, tem o significado transformado. Quando dizemos <\/em>steer clear<\/em><\/strong>, estamos dizendo que \u00e9 pra se afastar, evitar, se distanciar de algo, ou de alguma coisa.<\/em>\u200d<\/p>\n

Speaking of Zelenkskiy, we\u2019re going to go to Ukraine for an update. The US president, Joe Biden, <\/em>called<\/em><\/strong> the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, a war criminal on Monday, and said he would <\/em>call for<\/em><\/strong> a war crimes trial. Outrage is mounting over the alleged massacre near Kyiv.<\/em><\/p>\n

To many in the West, the Bucha killings became a <\/em>wake-up call<\/em><\/strong>, the first chance to see the scope of mass killings of civilians that amount to war crimes \u2013 or even genocide.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe world cannot be tricked anymore; the spotlight is on Putin and his forces,\u201d Ivar Dale, a senior policy adviser with the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, a human rights watchdog, told Al Jazeera.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe demand a thorough, international investigation, and we demand justice for the victims of these war crimes,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n

President Biden also said he would seek more sanctions after reported atrocities in Ukraine.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to continue to provide Ukraine with the weapons they need to continue the fight. And we have to gather all the detail, so this can be an actual \u2013 have a war crimes trial,\u201d Biden said, according to remarks posted by Associated Press.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u200dNessa hist\u00f3ria, n\u00f3s temos tr\u00eas usos distintos do verbo <\/em>call<\/em><\/strong>. O primeiro, quando dizemos \u201cBiden <\/em>called<\/em><\/strong> Putin a war criminal\u201d. O segundo uso de <\/em>call<\/em><\/strong> est\u00e1 logo depois, quando dizemos que Bidn would <\/em>call for <\/em><\/strong>a trial. <\/em>Call for<\/em><\/strong> \u00e9 um phrasal verb, o que significa que a adi\u00e7\u00e3o da preposi\u00e7\u00e3o \u201cfor\u201d, muda o sentido do verbo. Voc\u00ea pode traduzir como \u201cchamar para\u201d, mas aqui o sentido \u00e9 de uma convoca\u00e7\u00e3o, um chamado oficial. \u200dO \u00faltimo uso dessa not\u00edcia \u00e9 quando dizemos <\/em>wake-up call<\/em><\/strong>. Literalmente, \u00e9 uma chamada para acordar. Ela pode ser, literalmente uma chamada, uma liga\u00e7\u00e3o para acordar algu\u00e9m. Mas n\u00f3s usamos essa express\u00e3o com mais frequ\u00eancia para falarmos de um alerta. \u00c9 algo que chama a aten\u00e7\u00e3o, desperta algu\u00e9m para alguma coisa. Esses s\u00e3o s\u00f3 alguns dos usos do verbo <\/em>call<\/em><\/strong>. Existem in\u00fameros outros, com preposi\u00e7\u00f5es, complementos e tempos verbais diferentes. Para identificar o significado de cada um em uma frase, \u00e9 importante focar no contexto, e n\u00e3o em palavras individualmente.<\/em>\u200d<\/p>\n

Now we move to China, where Shanghai remains under lockdown. Authorities said the lockdown will continue as it reviews results of an exercise to test all of its 26 million residents for COVID-19.<\/em><\/p>\n

The city began its two-stage lockdown on March 28, initially in Shanghai’s eastern districts, and later expanded to cover the whole city.<\/em><\/p>\n

“The city will continue to implement seal and control management and strictly implement ‘staying at home’, except for medical treatment,” the city government said on its official WeChat account.<\/em><\/p>\n

It did not indicate when the limitations might lift.<\/em><\/p>\n

Now, let\u2019s see some lighter news, shall we? Teens in Maryland, United States, are volunteering as \u201cvaccine hunters\u201d to help older residents get appointments.<\/em><\/p>\n

The students have joined their teachers in an effort to ensure that residents most at-risk during the coronavirus pandemic can secure their vaccinations.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sherwood High School 11th grade students Kashmira Heaton-Vakharia, 16, and Fernando Johnson, 17, began volunteering as \u201cvaccine hunters\u201d about a month ago.<\/em><\/p>\n

Their Spanish teacher, Tanya Aguilar, is part of a group of Montgomery County schoolteachers who started <\/em>scouring<\/em><\/strong> websites to get appointments for older residents, or for those who don\u2019t speak English and are considered vulnerable.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to do anything I could to help, and this was a perfect opportunity\u201d said Heaton-Vakharia. She explained she\u2019d followed news stories about the difficulties people were having in securing appointments.<\/em><\/p>\n

Both students said navigating the dozens of sites looking for vaccination appointments proved a challenge despite their computer skills, and they\u2019re happy to snag those appointments for others.<\/em><\/p>\n

The students estimate they have logged 215 appointments between them.<\/em><\/p>\n

Johnson explained the students often work in teams at each other\u2019s homes. When he collaborates with Heaton-Vakharia, they may jump back and forth between their phones and laptops.<\/em><\/p>\n

The tactic is helpful when getting appointments for family groups, said Johnson: \u201cI\u2019ll do a husband, she\u2019ll do a wife\u201d \u2014 and by doing both at the same time, \u201cwe can make sure they get done together, on the same day at the same time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Both students said the more they learned about health disparities that affect people in their own community, the more they were inspired to act.<\/em><\/p>\n

Their efforts helped schedule vaccinations for about 60 members of the Takoma Park Seventh Day Adventist Church. Among them was Pastor Daniel Xisto, who said he\u2019s grateful to the group of students for their help.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, man, I mean it meant the world to me and to my members, who have a hard time online,\u201d said Xisto, who snapped a picture of himself being vaccinated to encourage church members to get a shot.<\/em><\/p>\n

Xisto hopes that when his church is open for services, he can invite the vaccine hunters, and meet them in person.<\/em><\/p>\n
