Seguramente has escuchado que \u201cA<\/em>\u201d debe ser utilizada antes de palabras que empiezan con consonantes y \u201cAn<\/em>\u201d antes de las que empiezan con vocales. En la mayor\u00eda de los casos eso s\u00ed es verdad, \u00a1pero no siempre!<\/p>\n

Bueno, si esa regla de las consonantes y vocales no es totalmente cierta, \u00bfcu\u00e1l es?<\/p>\n

Primero, es importante enfatizar que esta es una regla general<\/strong> y es un buen punto de referencia para que entendamos d\u00f3nde colocar \u201cA<\/em>\u201d y \u201cAn<\/em>\u201d. La principal cuesti\u00f3n es que la regla no va a depender de c\u00f3mo se escribe la palabra, sino de c\u00f3mo se pronuncia<\/strong>. Es donde se ve la diferencia.<\/p>\n

Entonces, debes tener en mente que el \u201cA<\/em>\u201d se pone cuando la siguiente palabra empieza con sonido de consonante<\/strong>, mientras que se usa \u201cAn<\/em>\u201d cuando la siguiente palabra empieza con sonido de vocal<\/strong>. Observa los ejemplos abajo:<\/p>\n

A car<\/em><\/strong>
\n\u200d<\/em> Un coche<\/p>\n

A photo
\n\u200d<\/em><\/strong> Una foto<\/p>\n

An egg
\n\u200d<\/em><\/strong> Un huevo<\/p>\n

An impact
\n\u200d<\/em><\/strong> Un impacto<\/p>\n

En verdad la regla es demasiado simple. Lo que pasa es que la mayor\u00eda de las palabras que se escriben con consonantes van a tener tambi\u00e9n el sonido de consonante<\/strong>. Pero, como siempre, hay algunas excepciones<\/strong>. El principal caso es la \u201cH\u201d, que en algunas ocasiones es muda, y en otras, la pronunciaremos de manera similar a la \u201cJ\u201d en espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\n

Es por eso que decimos \u201cA habit<\/em>\u201d (con sonido de \u201cJ\u201d) y \u201cAn hour<\/em>\u201d, donde tiene sonido vocal (\u201cH\u201d muda).<\/p>\n

A <\/em><\/strong>habit
\n\u200d<\/em> Un h\u00e1bito<\/p>\n

An <\/em><\/strong>hour
\n\u200d<\/em> Una hora<\/p>\n

La misma regla se aplica a las palabras que empiezan con una vocal. La mayor\u00eda de esas palabras tienen escritura y sonido vocal, sin embargo, hay excepciones donde usamos \u201cAn<\/em>\u201d. Las excepciones normalmente son las palabras que empiezan con \u201ce\u201d, \u201co\u201d y \u201cu\u201d. Aqu\u00ed est\u00e1n algunos ejemplos:<\/p>\n

An <\/em><\/strong>umbrella
\n\u200d<\/em> Una sombrilla<\/p>\n

A <\/em><\/strong>university

Entonces, vamos a recordar: No es necesariamente la escritura lo que impacta en el uso de un art\u00edculo \u201cA\/An<\/em>\u201d, sino la pronunciaci\u00f3n<\/strong> de la palabra. Si el sonido es consonante o vocal.<\/p>\n
